In support of Erie Shores HealthCare values and strategic direction, the Occupational Health Nurse (OHN) is a vital team member working within the Occupational Health, Safety and Wellness department. The nurse will provide quality nursing care through a collaborative approach supporting employees and ESHC as it strives to support our employees through a safe and health work environment. The OHN plays an integral role in in the provision of the OHS & Wellness programs – communicable disease and health surveillance, blood borne disease management, health assessments (pre-placement, referrals, respiratory fitness), health teaching and promotion, immunization and support for disability management and attendance to support a high level of physical, mental and social wellbeing in order to promote optimum work performance and quality of work life.


Essential Job Functions
  • Provide crisis intervention, health counselling, and health teaching
  • Develop and implement a wellness program
  • Conduct initial assessments on all new employees to ensure overall health status is in good standing
  • Provide immunological services including TB testing and reading
  • Lead medical surveillance programs, as required
  • Follows medical directives as ordered by the Occupational Health Physician
  • Follow-up on reported incidents and/or injuries to staff
  • Assess injured/ill employees for return to work in consultation with managers
  • Participate with health promotion and health education activities, as assigned
  • Maintain and ensure confidentiality of employee medical files
  • Assisting, advising and supporting the abilities team in formulating modified work / accommodation plans
  • Assist in critical injury accident investigations alongside the Ministry of Labour
  • Conduct nursing assessments and administer first aid
  • Attendance management program
  • Identify, manage and respond to public health notices in a timely manner
  • Recommend internal resources (such as EAP provider, Occupational Health Physician, Physiotherapy, Ergonomic and other consultants) and provide information on external partners)
  • Provide support to managers on attendance related challenges related to medical conditions
  • Member of ESHC Joint Health and Safety Committee
  • Other related duties as assigned
  • Current Registered Nurse certificate of competence from College of Nurses of Ontario required
  • Canadian Certification in Occupational Health COHN(C) required or commitment to obtain certification within 12 months
  • BScN preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Comprehensive, working knowledge of relevant legislation and guidelines – Occupational health & Safety Act, Workplace Safety & Insurance Act, OHRC, Public Hospitals Act, Communicable Disease Surveillance Protocols for Ontario Hospitals MOHLTC preferred
  • Communicable Disease Surveillance, Immunization Protocols and exposure management knowledge and experience preferred
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in disability case management, absence management including STD, LTD and WSIB case Management preferred
  • Working knowledge of occupational wellness , ergonomics and safety preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to appropriately prioritize multiple tasks and problem solve complex situations
  • Strong assessment, health teaching/promotion skills
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, and interpersonal skills with various internal and internal stakeholders ensuring tact and diplomacy
  • Proficient organizational and planning skills with an ability to prioritize, multi-task and handle competing deadlines
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Work, Outlook, PowerPoint) and experience with Occupational Health software
  • Ability to perform the physical demands of the position
  • Above average attendance record with the capability of modelling this same standard for the organization
