Medical Laboratory Assistant

Applications are now being accepted for a Casual Medical Laboratory Assistant. Under the direction of qualified laboratory personnel, the MLA performs laboratory tests that require limited technical skill and responsibility and do not require interpretation, assessment, or the exercise of independent judgment (as per Ministry of Health guidelines). The successful applicant must be able to work Monday-Sunday, including holidays. The hours of work for this position are 0600-1400, 0630-1430, 0700-1500, 0830-1630, and 1500-2300.

 

Job Functions
  • Adhere to policies and procedures established for the assigned department while supporting the Mission, Vision and Values of Erie Shores Healthcare
  • Maintain the confidentiality of all patient information
  • Comply with the Occupational Health and Safety standards for the hospital and is proactive in promoting a safe work environment
  • Set up of laboratory tests
  • Phlebotomy, specimen collection and processing
  • Results transcription, record filing and retrieval
  • Operation of automated instruments after proper functioning has been established by a technologist
  • Reagent, sample and smear preparation, staining of smears, preparation of kits
  • Equipment maintenance, including temperature monitoring
  • Perform any other relevant duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Graduate of a Medical Laboratory Technician Program from an accredited College required
  • Certified by CSMLS (Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science), MLPAO (Medical Laboratory Professionals’ Association of Ontario), or equivalent required
  • MLPAO (Medical Laboratory Professionals’ Association of Ontario) membership required
  • Strong interpersonal skills related to dealing with the public in a health care setting
  • Ability to work effectively within a collaborative team environment
  • Demonstrated phlebotomy skills, with the ability to draw blood from patients of all ages (Newborns – Adults)
  • Able to prioritize and perform reliably and work independently
  • Basic level of proficiency in use of computers and other office equipment
  • General good health and a level of functional ability appropriate to the demands of the position
  • French Language Skills an asset
