Registered Practical Nurse

Perioperative Services

Temporary Full Time

Background
Applications are now being accepted for a Registered Practical Nurse to work in Perioperative Services. The successful applicant will be required to work Monday-Friday 0700-1500, 0730-1530, 0900-1700, and 0830-1630, including on call on weekends, holidays, and evenings. The commitment to this position for full-time is 75 hours per bi-weekly pay period and or part-time is 48 hours per bi-weekly pay period. The successful applicant must be able to be at the hospital within 30 minutes of being called in.

 

Job Functions 

 Maintaining confidentiality of all patient information

  • Assuming patient advocate role when patient is unable to represent self
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the policies and procedures related to the care of the patient in the perioperative space. This includes:
Scrub:
  •    Adhering to principles of aseptic technique
  •    Demonstrating knowledge and competency of the procedures and specific    techniques performed by each physician
  •    Appropriate care and handling of instruments and equipment
  •    Documenting appropriate information
  •    Maintain current knowledge of trends and/or changes by:
  •       Attending in-service programs and workshops
  •       Reading current literature
  •       Reading communication book
Endoscopy Nurse:
  •    Receives patients from Day Surgery
  •    Provides support and assistance to the endoscopists and anesthetists before,    during, and after the procedure
  •    Completes all required documentation, including specimen collection
  •    Reprocessing the scopes by conducting a manual pre-clean and leak test    and loading and unloading the automated endoscopy reprocesser after-hours    or when MDRD staff are unavailable
Day Surgery:
  •    Prepares patients for surgery, including taking and documenting an    appropriate history, starting an IV as indicated, and explaining the surgical    journey to the patient
  •    Escalates any patient safety concerns immediately to the MRP or    Anesthetists
  • Other duties as required

Qualifications

  • Certificate of Competence with the College of Nurses required
  • Completed Operating Room Technician Certificate at Community College level (intent to achieve will be considered, but preference will be given to those who have already completed the certificate.)
  • Applicants must have and maintain current Basic Cardiac Life Support, and be able to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation
  • Thorough knowledge of nursing principles, procedures and practices in accordance with the Standards of Practice of the College of Nurses of Ontario and the regulations of the Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA)
  • 1 year minimum of experience working in the O.R. is preferred
  • Demonstrate a progressive history of continuing education within the specialty
  • Previous experience in a medical/surgical area an asset
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Strong problem solving ability within the scope of practice
  • Able to deal with crisis situations in a calm, professional manner
  • Able to work collaboratively as a team member
